October: warm and mostly dry

October feels hot in Salalah, especially when you're walking around in the afternoon. The sea breeze can make the coast more comfortable, but sightseeing inland may feel tiring. Rain is scarce, so you're unlikely to have your plans interrupted by showers.

You can visit Al Baleed Archaeological Park, explore the frankincense displays at the Museum of the Frankincense Land, or spend time at Mughsail Beach. Wadi Darbat is still worth seeing, but don't expect the full waterfalls and green scenery of the khareef, the summer monsoon season. Save long inland walks for cooler parts of the day.

Events and the seasonal lull

Salalah's Khareef Festival is tied to the summer monsoon, so October isn't its main festival season. There isn't a dependable annual October event to build a trip around. Islamic holiday dates shift each year, so a holiday may fall in October some years, but not others.

After the summer khareef rush, visitor numbers usually ease. That can mean a calmer feel at popular sights and better-value stays than during peak khareef. December to February is a more popular time for comfortable weather, though, so October can be a quieter alternative.

A good fit for beach days

Families who prefer warm beach weather to misty mountain scenery may find October suits them well. The heat is real, though, so keep beach time or visits to Mughsail for the gentler parts of the day. Skip strenuous hikes in the midday sun.

For a local stop, head to Al Haffa Souq for frankincense and try a cup of Omani coffee nearby. The souq is an easy evening outing when the day's heat has eased. Don't expect the lush, cool look of khareef season: October is drier, brighter and better for relaxed coastal visits.
