When to go to Salalah: a seasonal guide
Winter: the easy months
From November to March, Salalah is at its most comfortable. Days are warm but not harsh, and December to February are the best of all. January afternoons reach about 27°C, and evenings are cool enough for a walk along the Al Haffa corniche or through the old Al Husn souq, where frankincense burners scent the lanes. Rain is rare and the sky is mostly clear.
This is the time for beaches, the Frankincense Land sites at Khor Rori and Al Baleed, and day trips to Mughsail, where the blowholes spout and the cliffs drop to the sea. Travelling with kids? Winter is also the easiest season for long drives along the coast. It's the main tourist season, so expect busier hotels, especially around school holidays and Oman's National Day in November.
Khareef: green, wet and misty
From late June to September, the monsoon, called khareef (say "kha-reef"), turns the hills green. July is the wettest month, with rain on about half the days, though most of it is drizzle and mist rather than storms. Humidity is high at around 88%, and the sea is rough, so swimming is often unsafe. Beaches have red flags, and you'll see more people picnicking in the hills than swimming.
If you like waterfalls and cool, damp air, this is your season. Wadi Darbat, with its lake and flowing streams, is at its best, and so is the drive up to Jebel Samhan. The Salalah Tourism Festival usually runs through the khareef, with music, shows and market stalls. It's also when Gulf families arrive in large numbers. Roads to Ain Razat and Darbat can crawl on weekends, and rooms are the most expensive of the year. Hoping for clear sunsets? Pick another season.
Spring and autumn: quiet shoulder months
April to June can be hot and sticky, with highs around 33°C and humidity climbing toward the monsoon. It's quiet and cheaper, but afternoons are best spent in the shade or by a hotel pool. Early mornings at Mirbat or Taqah are far more pleasant.
October and November are the better pick. The monsoon has gone, the hills are still a little green, and the sea calms down. Rain is almost absent in October, and November is rated Excellent. If you want beaches without winter crowds, this is your window.
For a simple rule: come in winter for sightseeing and swimming, in khareef for green scenery and cool mist, and in October or November for a bit of both.
