Winter and spring: the sweet spot

From November to April, Manama is at its easiest. Days are warm rather than fierce, and January and February are the coolest, with highs around 20°C. Evenings feel cool enough for a light jacket. Rain is rare and never lasts long, so plans almost never get washed out.

This is the time for walking. You can wander the Bab Al Bahrain area and the souq (old market) without wilting. You can also visit the Bahrain National Museum, Al Fateh Grand Mosque and the Qal'at al-Bahrain fort, a UNESCO site where there's little shade. Cafés in Adliya, the arty district, put tables outside again. Travelling with kids? Winter is the easiest season for the outdoor spots.

By April it's already 29°C and the beach season has started. Humidity stays moderate, but it can make the air feel heavy near the coast.

Summer: hot and sticky

From June to September, expect very hot days. July and August are the hottest, both with highs of 38°C and nights barely cooler. Humidity makes it worse, and the sun is strong for ten hours or more a day. Our data rates both months Poor.

Be honest with yourself about what you want. Hiking and long strolls aren't realistic. Most people move between air-conditioned malls, museums and restaurants, and go out after sunset. Hotels are often cheaper then. Beach clubs and hotel pools are the best way to cool off, since the sea itself is warm.

May and October are the shoulder months. Both are rated Good, with hot afternoons but easier evenings, especially in October.

Crowds and events

High season runs roughly from November to March. That's when business travellers, Gulf visitors and winter-sun tourists fill the hotels. Weekends here fall on Friday and Saturday, so those days can be busy at the malls and waterfront.

The Bahrain Grand Prix is the big draw, held at the Sakhir circuit. It's usually in the cooler months, and hotels fill up fast, so expect higher prices. Ramadan moves through the calendar each year. In that month, daytime eating out is limited, but nights are lively with family meals and late openings. Eid celebrations follow it. Check the dates for the year you travel.

If you want quiet and low prices, pick the summer, but accept the heat. For the best mix of comfort and things to do, aim for November, February or March.
