January weather

January feels warm and mostly dry in Salalah, with sunny days and comfortable evenings. The average high is 27°C, and rain is rare. It's a good month for walking around Al Baleed Archaeological Park, visiting the Frankincense Land Museum, or spending time on the coast.

You can swim and enjoy the beaches, though the sea can feel cool. Sightseeing is easier than during the sticky, rainy khareef season. Don't come expecting Wadi Darbat's famous seasonal waterfalls to be flowing; they're most impressive during the summer rains.

Quiet calendar

January doesn't bring Salalah's big annual festival. The Khareef season and its Salalah Tourism Festival take place in summer, not winter. New Year's Day falls in January, but it isn't the main reason to visit Dhofar.

For couples who prefer dry days and comfortable evenings, January suits relaxed beach time and unhurried visits to the Al Baleed ruins.

Winter visitors

January is part of Salalah's popular winter season, alongside December and February. You'll share sights and beaches with more visitors than in the hot summer months, though it's generally quieter than the busy khareef period. Accommodation can cost more than in the low season, especially around the winter holiday period.

For a practical stop, try frankincense at Al Husn Souq near the city centre. The resin is a local staple, and the market gives you a feel for Salalah's trading history. You can also visit nearby Al Haffa Beach, but don't expect the lush green hills seen in khareef.
