May heat

May feels like summer arriving early. Afternoons reach 39°C, while nights stay warm at around 26°C. With almost no rain, you can expect plenty of sun, but sightseeing outdoors can feel tiring by midday. Save Souq Waqif and the Museum of Islamic Art's waterfront for cooler hours. Keep indoor stops, such as the National Museum of Qatar, for the hottest part of the day. A long walk along the Corniche is better in the morning or evening than at noon.

Events and local days

The Qatar Economic Forum has often taken place in Doha in May, bringing business visitors and events to the city. Its dates can change, so check the schedule for your travel year. Eid al-Adha may also fall in May in some years; its timing follows the lunar calendar. Around Eid, local opening hours and family plans can shift.

Families will likely find indoor attractions easier than long outdoor outings in the afternoon.

Crowds and costs

May is much quieter than Doha's cooler travel season, which runs from December to March. The heat keeps many leisure visitors away, and hotel rates are often lower than in winter. It's a good time for a calmer city break if you're happy to plan around the warmest hours. June is hotter still, with a 42°C average high.

For an easy evening, take the Doha Metro to Souq Waqif station, then walk to the souq for dinner. Try machboos, a spiced rice dish often served with meat or fish. The souq is far more pleasant after the day's heat has eased.
