When to visit Qatar

Doha is the whole story

Almost everything you'll want to do in Qatar happens in Doha or a short drive from it. So there's really one climate to plan around. The country is small and flat, and the weather doesn't change much from place to place. The desert south and the northern beaches follow the same pattern.

December to March: the sweet spot

This is when Qatar feels easy. Days are warm and dry, and evenings are cool enough for a stroll along the Corniche, the waterfront promenade. You can sit outside at Souq Waqif, the old market, and linger over karak, the sweet spiced tea locals love. Desert trips to the Khor Al Adaid inland sea (also called the Inland Sea) are at their most comfortable.

January is the wettest month, but only 12 mm falls. Rain here means a short shower, not a ruined week. Don't plan around it.

This is also high season. Hotels fill up and rooms cost more, especially around big sporting events and in the cooler weeks of winter. If you want pleasant weather with fewer people, aim for the edges, like early December or late March.

April to October: the heat

Summer is long, and it's tough. July is the hottest month at 43°C, and the air can feel heavy and sticky near the coast. Most people move between air-conditioned places: malls, Museum of Islamic Art, the National Museum of Qatar. Beaches and outdoor sights are best at dusk, if at all.

The upside is low season. Flights and hotels are cheaper, and attractions are quiet. If you can handle heat and mostly want museums, food and shopping, it works.

Holidays and events

Ramadan, the fasting month, moves about eleven days earlier each year. Daytime eating and drinking in public is limited, though evenings come alive with iftar, the meal that breaks the fast. Eid al-Fitr, which follows it, and Eid al-Adha bring public holidays, and many locals travel or host family. Qatar National Day on 18 December is a big one. Expect parades, fireworks and crowds around the Corniche and Katara. Check Ramadan dates before you book.
