June: hot and very wet

June is sticky, with highs around 31°C, frequent rain and very little sunshine. That's why it rates 1/10 for comfort, and why November to February is the better time to plan your trip. Showers can spoil outdoor plans, and trails or river activities may be unsafe after heavy rain. Save the waterfalls and mountain walks for clearer spells. On a wet afternoon, a relaxed meal of Qingyuan chicken or some time indoors will suit you better.

If you're heading to Gulong Gorge, check whether its paths and attractions are open after rain. Water levels and slippery walkways can change the experience quickly.

Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival may fall in June, depending on the lunar calendar. If it does, look out for local dragon boat celebrations and try zongzi, sticky rice wrapped in leaves. Holiday dates can bring a short rise in travel crowds, especially around transport hubs.

Crowds and costs

Outside the holiday period, June is usually quieter than the November-to-February season, when Qingyuan draws more visitors. Fewer people also means stays may cost less than in those cooler months. The trade-off is the weather. For a more comfortable outing, head to a covered stop such as Feilai Temple when showers set in, and save outdoor sightseeing for a break in the clouds. July is hotter but much less rainy, so if rain is the main thing you want to avoid, June's wet weather is the deciding factor.
