Qingdao Weather in December

December: crisp and quiet

Qingdao in December feels properly wintry. Days reach about 6°C, while nights can drop to 2°C. Rain is light, with around three wet days, but the coast can feel colder when the wind picks up. There's limited daylight, so keep outdoor sightseeing to the brighter part of the day.

You can still walk the waterfront and see the old German-style buildings around Badaguan. The sea views are lovely, but swimming and long beach days are out. Skip exposed coastal walks if the wind makes them uncomfortable. Tsingtao Beer Museum is a good indoor stop.

Christmas and New Year

Christmas isn't a major traditional holiday in China, and Qingdao doesn't have a big December festival to plan around. You may see seasonal decorations in shopping areas, while New Year's Eve brings some local celebrations. Don't expect the large crowds or city-wide events found at major holiday destinations.

If you hate crowds, December is a calmer time to visit than summer, when Qingdao's beaches and Beer Festival draw more people. Hotels and flights are generally less in demand than in peak summer, though prices vary.

Make the most of the coast

The air is drier than in November, and December has more sun each day than cloud. That makes short visits to Zhanqiao Pier or the old town easier to enjoy between chilly spells. May and October are better for comfortable outdoor days, so December suits you more if you prefer quiet sights to beach weather.

Travelling with kids? Keep the seaside stroll brief, then warm up with a bowl of seafood wonton soup in Shinan. A useful local tip: take the coastal walk from Zhanqiao toward Badaguan only when the wind feels manageable. You can duck inland into the old town instead.
