September in Panaji feels warm, damp and cloudy. Highs reach 28°C, and rain falls on 25 days, so streets can stay slick and the air feels heavy. The downpours ease from August, but sunshine is still limited.

Old Goa's churches and Panaji's Fontainhas lanes work well between showers. Keep plans flexible, though: heavy rain can make riverside walks and boat trips less appealing. Skip long outdoor days if you want dry weather for beaches or hiking. November to February is a better bet for that.

Festivals and quieter streets

Ganesh Chaturthi, known locally as Chovoth, often falls in September, though its date changes each year. You may see decorated shrines and family celebrations around Panaji. The city's quieter feel can make local life easier to notice.

If you hate crowds, September is calmer than the popular November-to-February season. It's also a lower-demand time, so stays may cost less than in peak months. Rain can still disrupt your plans, so don't count on every day being suitable for a long outing.

Make the most of a rainy day

Travelling with kids? Keep a nearby indoor option in mind for sudden showers. The Goa State Museum in Patto is a useful stop when a walk along the Mandovi waterfront gets too wet.

For a local food break, duck into Fontainhas for a plate of Goan fish curry and rice. Carry a small umbrella through its narrow lanes; puddles and dripping roofs can make a short walk messy. If you're heading to Miramar Beach, treat it as a quick look rather than a full beach day. September's clouds and frequent rain can take the shine off a long stay by the water.
