Visiting Pune in September
September: wet and close
September in Pune still feels like monsoon season: warm, very humid and often cloudy. Rain falls on many days, so expect damp pavements and sudden delays rather than long, clear stretches. The hills around the city look green, but muddy paths can make walks less pleasant.
You can still visit indoor sights such as the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, or take a short break in a café around Deccan. Keep outdoor plans flexible. Sinhagad Fort is a tempting day trip, but rain can make the approach and trails slippery; skip the climb if conditions look poor.
Ganeshotsav crowds
Ganesh Chaturthi often falls in September, though its date changes each year. Pune's celebrations are especially known for their large public Ganesh idols, including those around the old city. The final immersion procession, called visarjan, can bring crowds and road closures, so check local arrangements before crossing the centre.
Travelling with kids? A quieter temple visit away from the main procession may be easier than standing in dense crowds.
Quieter, but not dry
September is generally less busy than Pune's popular November-to-January travel season. You may find fewer visitors and softer hotel rates, though Ganeshotsav can make central areas busy around the celebrations. Compared with August, September is less rainy; October is drier still, so don't expect reliable outdoor days just yet.
For a practical local tip, ask about road conditions before setting off for Sinhagad via the Katraj-Dehu Road route. Heavy rain can slow the drive, and wet steps near the fort need care. If the sky stays grey, swap the outing for misal pav at a well-known city eatery and save the fort for a clearer day.
