December is warm, mostly sunny and much drier than November. Afternoons can feel sticky, but rain is unlikely to interrupt a day out. You'll have good conditions for wandering Fontainhas, visiting the Goa State Museum or taking a Mandovi River cruise.

The heat makes long walks at midday less comfortable, so save the lanes around the Latin Quarter for the cooler parts of the day. Beach time is easy to fit in, though Panaji itself is better for riverside strolls and old-town sights than lounging on the sand.

Christmas in Panaji

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated on December 8 at Panaji's Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Its bright white steps are a city landmark, and the feast brings a local crowd and a festive feel to the area. Christmas is widely celebrated too, with church services and decorations around town.

If you hate crowds, avoid the church area around the feast and Christmas services. The run-up to New Year is also busy across Goa, so Panaji's restaurants and riverfront can feel livelier than usual.

Crowds and practical tips

December falls in Goa's high season, within the best months to visit. Expect more visitors and higher hotel prices than in the rainy months. It's still a pleasant time for sightseeing, but don't expect the quieter streets you might find in the monsoon season.

Travelling with kids? Take a Mandovi cruise from the Panaji waterfront for an easy break from walking. For a simple local meal, try fish thali in the city; it's a filling way to pause between Fontainhas and the church. The weather is far drier than November, though January is drier still.
