May feels hot and sticky

May is hot, humid and often tiring by midday. The daytime high is 32°C, and nights stay warm, with lows around 28°C. Rain falls on 11 days, but showers don't take over the month. You'll still get some sunshine between cloudy spells.

Keep outdoor sightseeing to the cooler parts of the day. Fontainhas' colourful lanes and the riverside are pleasant for a shorter wander, but long walks can feel draining. Save the Goa State Museum or a slow lunch for the sticky afternoon. Beach time is possible, though May isn't the easiest month for lingering in the heat.

Quiet before the rains

Goa Statehood Day falls on 30 May, with celebrations marking Goa's formation as a state. May also includes Labour Day on 1 May. If you're hoping for a big festival calendar, this is a quieter month than Goa's winter season.

If you hate crowds, May can suit you: visitor numbers are generally lower than from November to February. Prices are often lower too, though they vary by hotel and dates. June brings much heavier rain, so May is a warm, quieter shoulder month before the monsoon sets in.

Make the heat work for you

Travelling with kids? Plan a short morning visit to the Immaculate Conception Church, then spend the hotter hours somewhere cool in central Panaji. The church's broad steps are lovely to see, but sitting in the sun there can get uncomfortable.

For a local pause, order fish curry rice at a Panaji restaurant rather than turning lunch into another walk across town. Keep plans flexible if a shower rolls through; May has rain, even though it's far drier than June.
