May: hot afternoons

May is a fair month to visit Shivaji Nagar, rating 4.5 out of 10, and the heat is the main reason. Daytime highs reach around 37°C. April is a little hotter, but May brings far more rain, with short showers that can cut into an afternoon out. Most days stay sunny, so plan indoor sights for the hottest hours and save Shaniwar Wada or the old city for when it cools down.

The heat also makes long walks around Fergusson College Road tiring by midday. Keep outdoor plans short. Don't expect a full beach-style day either, since Shivaji Nagar is inland and June's monsoon rains are much heavier. Evenings are kinder, so that's a good time for a meal or a stroll.

Holidays and local life

Maharashtra Day falls on May 1, marking the creation of Maharashtra state. It's a public holiday, so government offices close and some businesses may change their hours. May is also a school-holiday period, which brings more families to Pune's sights. Even so, the city feels quieter than it does in the cooler months.

If crowds put you off, May might suit you better than the busy season. Visitor demand is generally lower than during Pune's popular winter months, so stays may cost less. Holiday weekends can still fill up, though. If good weather is your priority, November to January is the better bet.

Make the heat work

Travelling with kids? Keep Shaniwar Wada to a shorter morning visit, then take a break indoors through the sticky afternoon.

For a practical shortcut, use Shivajinagar Metro station to reach central Pune without sitting in hot road traffic. If a shower rolls in, duck into the nearby Deccan area for a meal. Misal pav, a spicy curry served with bread, makes a filling stop. May is manageable if you pace your sightseeing, but it's not the easiest month for long days outdoors.
