Visiting Mumbai in September
Rain still rules
September is warm, sticky and very wet. The high is 29°C, and rain falls on 25 days, so you'll often meet showers between outings. The monsoon is easing, but it hasn't packed up yet; August is wetter, while October is much drier.
Choose indoor stops such as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya or a café in Kala Ghoda. Short walks along Marine Drive can work between showers, but don't count on a dry beach day or clear views from the waterfront. Heavy rain can slow road traffic and disrupt local trains, so keep your plans flexible.
Ganesh festival season
Ganesh Chaturthi may fall in September, though its date changes each year. If it does, Mumbai's Ganeshotsav brings decorated Ganesh idols, music and crowds to neighbourhoods across the city. The final immersion processions, called visarjan, can draw huge crowds around Girgaon Chowpatty and close nearby roads.
If you hate crowds, skip the waterfront during the main visarjan processions and visit the area on an ordinary day. If you want to join the festival, check which local pandals—temporary shrines for the idols—are open during your stay.
A quieter, damp visit
September sits between the busy, dry season and the monsoon's wettest stretch. You'll generally find fewer visitors and lower hotel prices than in November to January, though festival days can make popular areas feel packed. The weather can make a long sightseeing list frustrating; leave room to swap outdoor plans for a museum or a meal.
For a practical local tip, use the Western Line to reach Churchgate for Marine Drive rather than relying on a taxi during heavy rain. If trains are delayed, give yourself extra time before heading to Girgaon Chowpatty, especially on an immersion day.
