Mumbai Weather in August
India · August climate averages and travel tips
In August, Mumbai has average highs of 28°C (83°F) and lows of 25°C (76°F). The month is very wet, with about 579 mm (22.8 in) of rain spread over 29 days, making it the second wettest month of the year. Humidity averages 90%, so it feels sticky and hotter than the thermometer suggests. You get roughly 12.6 hours of daylight and frequently cloudy skies.
Is August a good time to visit Mumbai?
August is not the best time to visit Mumbai (2.1/10) mainly because of the rain. The weather is much better in November to January.
Visiting Mumbai in August
August: wet and sticky
August feels warm, damp and cloudy, with rain on almost every day. The air can feel heavy, and sunshine is scarce. Streets may flood during downpours, so getting across the city can take longer than you expect.
You can still enjoy indoor stops like the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya or the cafés around Kala Ghoda. Between showers, watch the monsoon surf from Marine Drive, but don't swim: rough seas and strong currents make Mumbai's beaches a poor choice.
What to do
India's Independence Day falls on 15 August, with flag-raising ceremonies and events around the city. August can also bring Raksha Bandhan, a family festival, but its date changes each year.
If you love museums and cafés more than beach days, August can work. If you hate crowds, you'll usually find fewer tourists than in Mumbai's November-to-January high season. Hotel prices are often lower, too, though local traffic and rain can still make a short journey feel long.
Getting around
Rainfall is heavy, but August is not Mumbai's wettest month: July gets more. September is usually drier, so waiting until then may mean easier sightseeing. Avoid packing your day with outdoor stops, especially around low-lying parts of South Mumbai.
A useful local tip: check Mumbai local train updates before crossing the city. Heavy rain can disrupt services, and a delay can affect your plans far beyond the station. For a shorter outing, stay around Fort and Kala Ghoda, where the museum, cafés and historic buildings are close together.
