Visiting Minsk in January
January weather in Minsk
January feels cold, grey and damp in Minsk. The average high is -5°C and the low is -10°C, with rain or other wet weather on 14 days. Heavy cloud and little sun mean pavements can turn slushy or icy, and the short days leave less time for sightseeing. That's why January rates 0/10 for visitors, and why June and August to September are the far better choices.
You can still enjoy a walk around Independence Square or the Upper Town, but keep outdoor stops brief. When the weather turns nasty, the National Art Museum and the Belarusian Great Patriotic War Museum are better bets. Skip long countryside walks, since a damp, slippery day can wear you out fast.
What's on in January
New Year celebrations carry on into January, and Orthodox Christmas falls on January 7. You may find church services and seasonal events around the city, including near the Holy Spirit Cathedral in the Upper Town. The exact programme changes each year, so don't count on a particular concert or market being open.
If you hate crowds, January is quieter than summer. Minsk's main sights and hotels usually see less demand, so prices may be lower. The festive period around New Year can be busier, though. Keep in mind that nearby Warsaw and Krakow are no warmer this month, both rated Poor, so a quick change of city won't get you out of the cold.
January in Minsk: local tips
Travelling with kids? A cold, wet afternoon is easier with a stop at the Belarusian State Circus than another long walk outside.
Use the Minsk Metro to cross the city between outdoor sights. Its stations are warm, and it's an easy way to reach central stops such as Kastryčnickaja, near Independence Square. For a local comfort-food break, try draniki: crisp potato pancakes, often served with sour cream. After a short stroll through the Upper Town, they're a welcome way to warm up.
