Visiting Kyiv in January
Cold, grey days
January in Kyiv feels properly wintry. Daytime highs average -3°C, nights fall to -9°C, and damp air makes the cold feel sharper. With little sunshine and short days, you'll want indoor plans alongside walks.
St Sophia's Cathedral and the National Art Museum make good stops when the sky is low. Khreshchatyk is still worth seeing, but icy pavements can make long walks tiring. Save the Dnipro riverfront for a clear spell, and don't count on a sunny day for outdoor sightseeing.
New Year and Christmas
New Year's Day is a public holiday, and some businesses may close or keep shorter hours. Ukraine now officially celebrates Christmas on December 25, though some people still observe it on January 7. Don't expect a large citywide Christmas event in January.
If you hate crowds, you'll find central Kyiv quieter than in August and September. Winter is generally a lower-demand time, so stays may cost less than in peak months. But the war can affect transport, opening hours and travel plans, so quieter doesn't always mean simpler.
Make indoor plans
Travelling with kids? Keep a museum or café stop in reserve when the cold and grey weather gets tiring. Kyiv's metro is useful for getting across the city without long outdoor walks. It also serves as a shelter during air alerts; follow local instructions if one sounds.
For a warm meal, try borshch, the beet soup served across Ukraine, at a restaurant around Podil. Check that your chosen sights and metro routes are operating before setting out. The weather data can't tell you about wartime disruptions, and those may shape your day more than the forecast.
