Visiting Chisinau in January
January feels cold and grey
Chişinău in January is properly wintry. Days hover around freezing, nights fall below it, and damp air makes the cold feel sharper. Clouds often linger, with only a little sunshine and short daylight. Rain can leave pavements slick; when it turns to ice, walking around the city centre takes care.
You can still enjoy indoor stops, such as the National Museum of History of Moldova or a long lunch of mămăligă, a cornmeal dish. Keep outdoor sightseeing to shorter stretches between warm cafés. January isn't a good month for leisurely park walks or countryside hikes.
Holiday calm, fewer visitors
New Year's Day and Orthodox Christmas on January 7 are the main January holidays. Some businesses and museums may close or change hours, so check before heading to a particular stop. You may also hear people mark Old New Year in mid-January, though it's a smaller occasion.
If you hate crowds, you'll find Chişinău quieter than in May or September, its best months for visiting. January is low season, so stays and flights are often cheaper than in those busier months. The trade-off is a subdued feel, and less comfortable weather for long days outside.
Make the centre your base
Stay near Bulevardul Ştefan cel Mare, the city's main avenue, so you can duck indoors between sights. The Nativity Cathedral and its park are close by, but icy paths can make a quick visit more sensible than a long wander. For a local meal, try plăcinte, filled pastries often served warm.
Travelling with kids? Use trolleybuses to cut down on cold walks, and keep the Cathedral visit brief if the ground is slippery. Check opening hours around Orthodox Christmas before setting out.
