May and September are the sweet spots

May is fresh and green. The parks, like Valea Morilor, are lovely, and you can walk the city all day without wilting. September is warm and dry, and it's harvest time. That makes it the best month for wine country.

In late summer, hot days are normal. August is the hottest month at 31°C. Afternoons on the pavement get heavy, so spend them underground. The cellars at Cricova and Milestii Mici stay cool all year, and they're a smart place to hide from the heat.

June is the wettest month at 71 mm, usually in short, loud downpours rather than all-day grey. Don't cancel plans, just keep an umbrella handy.

Events, holidays and crowds

Moldova doesn't get big tourist crowds, so "high season" is gentle. July and August are busiest, mostly with locals and the diaspora (Moldovans who live abroad) coming home.

The big event is National Wine Day, in the first weekend of October. It fills the centre of Chisinau with tastings and stalls. Book your hotel early if you want to be there. Independence Day on 27 August and Limba Noastră ("our language") on 31 August bring concerts and street events.

Orthodox Easter is a major family holiday. Some shops and restaurants close, and buses fill up as people travel to villages. Winter is the quiet season. It's cold and grey, but the Christmas lights are pretty and hotels are at their cheapest. If you hate crowds and don't mind a coat, it's a fine time for the city.
