December weather

Kyiv is properly cold in December, with daytime highs around -1°C and nights near -6°C. Damp air, frequent cloud and little sunshine can make it feel colder than the thermometer suggests. Rain may fall as sleet or snow, and pavements can get slippery.

It's not a great month for long walks through the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra grounds or along the Dnipro. Stick to shorter outdoor visits, then warm up in a café around Podil or Khreshchatyk. Museums and the metro make useful breaks from the weather.

Christmas and New Year

St Nicholas Day falls on December 6, and Christmas is celebrated on December 25. Kyiv often puts up a main Christmas tree near St Sophia's Cathedral, but wartime conditions can change public events and their locations. Check local updates before heading to a gathering.

If you hate crowds, visit the tree on a weekday rather than around Christmas or New Year. Even then, expect security checks and possible changes to transport or opening hours.

Crowds and practical tips

December is quieter than August and September, Kyiv's best-weather months. You'll generally find fewer visitors, and accommodation can cost less than in peak summer. Prices may rise around the holidays, though, and winter weather can disrupt sightseeing.

For an indoor stop, the National Museum of the History of Ukraine is close to St Andrew's Church in the old town. Check its opening status before you go. Also keep the Kyiv metro in mind: stations can serve as shelters during air-raid alerts. Know the nearest entrance to your plans, especially around Maidan Nezalezhnosti.
