Visiting Minsk in February
February's deep winter
Minsk in February feels cold, dim and often damp. The daytime high is -3°C, while nights drop to -9°C. Rain falls on 11 days, and the sky is cloudy most of the time. With little sunshine and short days, long outdoor sightseeing can feel tiring.
You can still see central sights such as Independence Square and the Red Church, but keep walks short. Ice and slush can make pavements unpleasant, so save longer strolls along the Svislach River for clearer spells. The National Art Museum and cosy cafés around Zybitskaya Street make better stops when the cold sets in.
Holidays and winter pace
Maslenitsa, a festival marking the end of winter with pancakes and folk celebrations, sometimes falls in February. Its timing changes each year, so it may take place in March instead. February 23 is Defender of the Fatherland Day, observed in Belarus, though it's not a major sightseeing event.
If you hate crowds, February is a quieter time to visit than June or August to September. It's winter low season, so accommodation and flights may cost less than in the warmer months. Don't expect spring-like conditions: March is still chilly, and February's weather can put a limit on how much you want to explore outside.
Make the cold easier
Travelling with kids? Plan indoor breaks between outdoor sights, rather than trying to cover the city on foot. Minsk's metro is useful for crossing town without spending too long in the cold. For the National Library, take the metro to Uschod station; the building is a short walk from there.
At the library, you can warm up inside and take in its unusual diamond-shaped design. For a local winter treat, try draniki, Belarusian potato pancakes, in a nearby café. They're filling after a cold day, and a relaxed meal can be a welcome pause before heading back out.
