When to go to Minsk: a seasonal guide
Summer and early autumn: the best stretch
June, August and September are your best bets. June has the most sun, around 7.6 hours a day, and highs near 21°C. That's comfortable for walking Independence Avenue, wandering the Trinity Suburb (a restored old quarter by the Svislach river) and sitting out in Gorky Park.
July is the warmest, along with August, at 23°C. It's also the wettest month, with rain on 17 days. Showers tend to be short, so keep a plan B like the National Library's observation deck or the Great Patriotic War Museum.
August and September are calmer. September is the driest of the good months, with rain on just 9 days. Try Loshitsa Park or the Minsk Sea (a big reservoir with beaches) while it's still mild. Local school holidays run through summer, so weekends at the reservoir and parks fill up with families. Minsk isn't a big tourist hub, so hotels rarely feel packed.
Spring and late autumn: the in-between months
April is cool and fair, with highs around 11°C. May is greener and warmer at 17°C, but it's the wettest of the spring months. Still, it's a good pick if you like quiet museums and cafés over sunshine. Try a bowl of draniki (potato pancakes) with sour cream when it drizzles.
October is similar to April, with highs near 10°C and grey skies. By November the sun is down to about 1.4 hours a day and the damp gets into everything. Skip it unless you're after cheap rooms and don't mind the gloom.
Winter: cold, dark and cosy
From December to February, Minsk is properly cold. Highs sit between -5°C and -2°C, and January is the coldest month, with lows around -10°C. The sun barely shows, at about an hour a day, and humidity is very high. It feels raw and grey.
Is winter worth it? If you love Christmas markets and snowy parks, yes. Belarus celebrates Christmas on 25 December and again on 7 January (Orthodox Christmas), so the festive season runs long. Warm up in a café with hot sbiten (a spiced honey drink) or head to the banya (a Russian-style sauna) for a proper local evening.
Winter days are short, so spend them indoors. Save the old town strolls for the late afternoon, when the lights come on.
