Visiting Gdansk in January
January: cold and grey
January in Gdańsk feels damp, chilly and often overcast. The daytime high is around 1°C, and nights can dip below freezing. Rain falls on about 15 days, so the cobbled streets may be wet or slick. With little sunshine and short days, long outdoor sightseeing can feel tiring.
You can still enjoy the Main Town's cafés, St Mary's Church and indoor museums, including the Museum of the Second World War. The waterfront by the Motława is less appealing for a long walk when it's cold and windy. Save beach time in Brzeźno for another season.
A quiet month
January is much calmer than the busy summer months, when Gdańsk is at its best from June to September. Visitor numbers are generally low, and accommodation can cost less than in peak season. The trade-off is a subdued feel, with fewer sunny hours for wandering around.
Families who prefer quiet museum visits to beach days may find January suits them well. Keep in mind that Epiphany on 6 January is a public holiday in Poland, and some shops may close. Gdańsk often marks the day with a Three Kings procession; it's worth checking local notices for details.
Plan around the weather
Rain and high cloud are common, so build your day around indoor stops rather than a long walk between sights. The Amber Museum, now housed in the Great Mill, is a handy place to duck inside while exploring the centre. For a warming meal, try żurek, a sour rye soup often served hot.
If you're heading to the Motława, keep the walk short and use the riverside as a route between indoor sights, not the whole day's plan. January is colder and darker than December's milder start to winter, though it's usually less wet than December. Days are already lengthening by February, but January still calls for a slower pace.
