Cool days for exploring

December is one of Lahore's best months for sightseeing. Afternoons are mild, while mornings and evenings feel chilly, so you'll want to time outdoor plans around the warmer part of the day. The dry air and long sunny spells suit walks through Lahore Fort and the Walled City.

You can enjoy the gardens at Shalimar Bagh without summer's sticky heat. Avoid relying on late-night outdoor plans if you feel the cold easily. December is much cooler than November, and January is cooler still.

Christmas and winter crowds

Christmas brings services and celebrations to Lahore's Christian community, including at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Quaid-e-Azam Day, on December 25, marks the birthday of Pakistan's founder. It's a public holiday, so some offices and shops may close.

December falls within Lahore's popular winter travel season, which runs from November to February. Expect more visitors than in the hotter months, and potentially higher hotel prices. If you hate crowds, go to the Walled City on a weekday rather than a holiday.

Make the most of your visit

With little rain, December usually works well for a full day outdoors. You can explore the Badshahi Mosque, then warm up with a bowl of nihari, a slow-cooked meat stew, near the old city. Keep some indoor time in reserve: winter air pollution can make long stretches outside uncomfortable.

Travelling with kids? Lahore Zoo and the nearby Lahore Museum give you easy alternatives if the air feels poor. Check local air-quality reports before setting out, especially for a walk along Mall Road.
