What to do in June

Poson Poya, a Buddhist full-moon holiday, usually falls in June. It marks the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and brings religious observances. Kandy's temples may be busier around the holiday, though the biggest Poson pilgrimage crowds gather elsewhere.

If you hate crowds, June is generally calmer than February and the busy Esala Perahera season, which usually takes place in July or August. With fewer visitors than in peak months, accommodation prices can be lower, though the Poson holiday may bring a local bump.

Travelling with kids? Choose the covered parts of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic when showers pass, then stroll along Kandy Lake if the weather clears. The city's compact centre makes it easy to pause for a snack rather than commit to a long outing.

A Kandy-specific tip: remove your shoes before entering the Temple of the Tooth's shrine areas, and leave them at the shoe counter near the entrance. If rain has slowed your plans, try a plate of hot Kandy-style kottu roti nearby. It's a filling choice after a damp walk.
