Visiting Kandy in September
September weather in Kandy
September feels warm, sticky and often cloudy. The high reaches 29°C, with rain on 18 days, so showers can interrupt a walk without wiping out the whole day. The sun averages just over three hours daily, and the comfort rating is poor. Keep outdoor plans flexible.
You can still visit the Temple of the Tooth, wander around Kandy Lake or explore the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya between showers. Udawattakele Forest Reserve can be muddy underfoot, so skip its trails after heavy rain. October is much wetter, but February is a better bet for drier sightseeing.
Festivals and local rhythm
Binara Poya, a Buddhist full-moon holiday, falls in September. You may notice worshippers visiting temples, including the Temple of the Tooth. It's a quieter religious observance than Kandy's famous Esala Perahera, which is usually held earlier in the year. Don't expect the grand parade in September.
If you hate crowds, this can be a calmer time to explore the city than the Perahera period. Tourist numbers are generally lower than in February, one of Kandy's best months, and prices may be gentler. Rain and cloud can make the hills feel less inviting, though, so the quieter streets come with less reliable outdoor weather.
Make rainy spells work
Plan a day around indoor sights when the sky closes in. The National Museum of Kandy is beside the Temple of the Tooth, making it an easy pairing without crossing town. For a break, try a warm cup of Ceylon tea at a café around Kandy Lake while the rain passes.
Travelling with kids? Keep the Royal Botanic Gardens for a dry stretch; wet paths can turn a long garden visit into a slog. One Kandy-specific tip: check with your guesthouse before setting out for Udawattakele. Locals can tell you if its forest paths are muddy after recent showers.
