April feels hot, sticky and often cloudy. Highs reach 30°C, and humidity sits around 80%. Rain falls on many days, so you may get a sharp shower between sightseeing stops. There's less sunshine than the long daylight hours suggest.

The Temple of the Tooth and the old streets around Kandy Lake still work well for a visit. Keep outdoor plans flexible, though. A wet afternoon can make the steep paths up to the Bahirawakanda Buddha harder to enjoy. If you hate crowds, don't expect the dry, easy-going feel of February, Kandy's best month overall.

New Year in April

Sri Lankan Sinhala and Tamil New Year falls in mid-April. It's a major holiday, with family visits and traditional games. Some shops and services may close, while travel gets busy as people visit relatives. Check local opening times before heading to a museum or shop.

Travelling with kids? New Year customs and games can add a special local touch, but public transport may be crowded around the holiday. Kandy's Esala Perahera, the city's famous procession, happens later in the year, not in April.

Crowds and practical tips

April isn't Kandy's main dry-season peak, so it can feel quieter than the busiest winter months. But New Year brings a short domestic travel rush, and popular sights may feel busier then. Prices can be less pressured outside that holiday period, though don't assume every hotel drops its rates.

For a rainy spell, head to the Temple of the Tooth, then find a sheltered spot near Kandy Lake rather than setting off on a long walk. If you're taking the train from Kandy towards Ella, rain can affect views along the route; keep your plans flexible. April is wetter than March, with 165 mm of rain compared with March's 102 mm.
