Galle Weather in April

April: warm and very wet

April feels hot and sticky in Galle, with warm nights and frequent rain. Showers can interrupt a beach day, and clouds often soften the sunshine. The sea and shore are still there, but don't count on long, dry stretches by the water.

Rain doesn't rule out sightseeing. You can explore Galle Fort's lanes between showers, then duck into a café when the rain picks up. The weather is less suited to long walks on the ramparts or a full day at Unawatuna beach. Wet stone can be slippery, too.

New Year time

Sri Lanka's Sinhala and Tamil New Year falls in April, usually around the middle of the month. It's a major holiday, with family visits and celebrations. Some businesses may close or keep shorter hours, so check locally before setting out.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the New Year break. Galle is quieter than in the drier January and February high season, and prices are often lower outside holiday dates. But local travel can make transport and places to stay busier around the celebrations.

Make the most of a shower

April is wetter than March, but May is wetter still. Keep plans flexible: save Galle Fort's ramparts for a dry spell and use rainy hours for the fort's museums or a meal of rice and curry.

Travelling with kids? Choose a short Fort visit, with a café stop nearby if the rain starts. For a practical local tip, the stone ramparts around the Galle Lighthouse can get slick after showers. Take care on the steps, and don't try to rush along them in wet weather.
