Visiting Galle in November
November weather
November in Galle is hot, sticky and very wet. The high reaches 28°C, and rain falls on 27 days of the month. You can still explore Galle Fort, but sudden downpours may interrupt a walk along its ramparts. Cloudy skies and little sunshine can make beach days less reliable, too.
Plan around the rain rather than expecting a full day outdoors. Browse the shops and cafés inside the Fort, or visit the National Maritime Museum between showers. Skip long coastal walks when heavy rain sets in; paths can be slippery, and the sea may be rough. Evenings stay warm, but the humidity can feel tiring.
Festivals and quieter streets
November's full-moon Poya day is a public holiday in Sri Lanka. Some shops may close, so check locally if you have a particular Fort café or store in mind. Deepavali, the Hindu festival of lights, can also fall in October or November, depending on the year. It's observed by Hindu communities, though celebrations vary around Galle.
If you hate crowds, November is a quieter time to wander the Fort's lanes. It's outside the busier December-to-February season, when the south coast draws more visitors. You may find better-value stays than in peak months, though rain can limit beach time.
A useful Galle tip
Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day stop in mind: the National Maritime Museum is inside Galle Fort, close to the main sights and easy to reach on foot.
For a practical local detour, take shelter in a Fort café near Church Street when a shower starts, then return to the ramparts when it eases. Don't count on November for long, uninterrupted beach days. January and February are better bets for drier weather.
