Visiting Jodhpur in June
June: fierce summer heat
June is hot in Jodhpur, with daytime highs around 41°C and nights still warm at 29°C. The air feels drier than you might expect, but the heat wears you down fast, and the sun can make the blue lanes of the old city hard to enjoy for long. You'll also get some rain, usually a handful of showers across the month. May is hotter still, and July brings much heavier rain, so June sits in the uncomfortable middle. If you can, aim for December to February instead.
If you do go, plan around the heat. Save indoor visits for the hottest part of the day. Mehrangarh Fort's museum gives you a break from the exposed courtyards, and Toorji Ka Jhalra stepwell is easier to enjoy when you aren't rushing between sights. Skip long walks along the walls or open desert trips in the midday sun.
Events and quieter streets
June isn't a major fixed festival month in Jodhpur. Eid al-Adha may fall in June in some years, but the date shifts with the lunar calendar, so ask locally before you plan around it.
If you hate crowds, June can suit you. It's summer low season, so the fort and old-city streets are generally quieter than in the cooler months from December to February. Hotels may offer better deals, though the heat is the trade-off. Jodhpur's school break also brings some Indian families on the road, so quieter doesn't mean empty.
Make the heat work for you
Keep your sightseeing close together, then spend the afternoon in a cool room or a shaded café near the Clock Tower. A short visit to the covered stalls of Sardar Market is far more comfortable than a long wander through open lanes.
Travelling with kids? Make Mehrangarh's museum the main outing and avoid lingering in its sunlit ramparts. If a shower passes while you're at the fort, take a tuk-tuk back rather than walking down the exposed road. The rain is limited, but wet patches can make the stone steps around Toorji Ka Jhalra slippery, so take it slow there.
