Mild days, cool evenings

December is one of the easiest months for sightseeing in Jodhpur. Afternoons are warm without being scorching, and the dry air makes wandering around Mehrangarh Fort or the blue lanes of Navchokiya far more comfortable than in the hotter months. Rain is rare, so a planned day out rarely gets washed out, and you'll get plenty of sunshine for views across the old city.

The evenings are another story. Once the sun goes down, it cools off quickly, so the walk back from the fort can feel chilly. The days are also shorter than in summer, so plan to see Jaswant Thada and the fort before dusk rather than cramming in a long list of sights.

Christmas and New Year

December isn't known for a major festival in Jodhpur. Christmas and New Year bring celebrations at some hotels and restaurants, but they aren't citywide events on the scale of the Rajasthan International Folk Festival, which is held in October.

Still, if your trip falls over the holidays, expect more people around the main sights and more demand for rooms than in the hot months. December is part of the city's popular winter season, so prices can run higher than in the quieter summer. The city doesn't feel packed everywhere, but Mehrangarh Fort and the lanes around the Clock Tower can get busy.

Tips for Jodhpur in December

If crowds bother you, go to Mehrangarh Fort early in the day, then save the old city's blue-painted streets for later. That gives you time to stop for a lassi near the Clock Tower before the evening chill sets in.

Travelling with kids? December's comfortable afternoons make the fort and Jaswant Thada easier outings than they are in summer. Just don't expect warm evenings. Plan a cosy dinner indoors after sunset, perhaps with a local dal baati churma.
