May: fierce afternoon heat

May is Hyderabad's hottest month, with April close behind: daytime highs reach 40°C, compared with 39°C in April. Evenings stay warm, with lows around 27°C, so you won't get much relief after sunset. Rain falls on about seven days, but showers don't make this a cool month.

The heat makes long walks around Golconda Fort or the Charminar area tiring, especially in the afternoon. Save outdoor sightseeing for the morning or evening, and use the hottest hours for indoor stops such as the Salar Jung Museum. Hussain Sagar's lakeside can work after sunset, when the day's worst heat has eased.

Festivals and quieter streets

May's religious holidays vary by year. Buddha Purnima and Eid al-Adha can fall in May, depending on the calendar, bringing local gatherings and changes to opening hours. Check dates for your travel year before setting plans around them.

If you hate crowds, May can suit you better than Hyderabad's cooler winter months, when November and December are popular for visits. The trade-off is the heat. May is generally a quieter, lower-season time, and hotels may cost less than in peak winter, though prices vary.

Make the heat work for you

Travelling with kids? Keep the Charminar and Laad Bazaar visit short, then head indoors before the afternoon gets harsh. Laad Bazaar's bangles are a classic Hyderabad find, but its lanes are easier to browse when it's cooler.

For a local meal, try Hyderabadi biryani at a restaurant rather than tackling a long outdoor outing in midday heat. If you're visiting Golconda, take a cab to the entrance instead of walking there from the road; the fort's steep paths are hard work in May. For a more comfortable trip, consider coming in November or December instead.
