Hyderabad Weather in January

January: sunny days, cool nights

January is one of Hyderabad's easiest months for getting out and about. Days are sunny and warm, while evenings and early mornings feel much cooler. Rain is rare, so you're unlikely to lose sightseeing time to a downpour.

The dry weather suits a walk around the Qutb Shahi Tombs or a visit to Golconda Fort. Both have open paths with little shade, so long climbs can feel tiring in the warmest part of the day. Save those for morning, then explore air-conditioned museums or cafés later. Evenings are comfortable for a stroll around Hussain Sagar.

Sankranti and city crowds

Sankranti, the harvest festival in mid-January, brings kite flying and festive food. You may spot colourful kites above neighbourhood rooftops. Dates and public events vary each year, so don't count on a particular festival programme.

January is popular for sightseeing, though it's generally less busy after the New Year rush. November and December are also excellent months, and December can draw plenty of winter visitors. Prices may be firmer than in the hotter months, especially around Sankranti and school holidays.

If you hate crowds, visit Charminar early, before the lanes around Laad Bazaar fill up.

A useful local tip

For Golconda Fort, take the steps at an easy pace and pause at the shaded spots; the route is steep and exposed in places. You'll get broad views over the city from the top, but the climb is less pleasant under the midday sun.

Afterward, head to nearby Toli Chowki for Hyderabadi biryani, a local rice dish cooked with spices and meat or vegetables. January's comfortable evenings make a relaxed meal there a good end to a day outdoors.
