Visiting Guayaquil in February
February: hot and rainy
February feels hot, sticky and often grey. Afternoons reach 32°C, while rain falls on most days; January is hotter, but February is wetter. Showers can interrupt plans, and cloud cover means little sunshine, so don't count on a long, bright beach day. The Malecón 2000 riverside promenade and Parque Seminario still work for short outings between showers. Save longer walks for a dry spell, and avoid planning a full day outdoors around Cerro Santa Ana's steps.
If you hate crowds, avoid the Carnaval holiday weekend.
Carnaval and local crowds
Carnaval usually falls in February or March, with the dates changing each year. Guayaquil marks it with local events and celebrations, though the biggest party atmosphere is often in other parts of Ecuador. Expect more local visitors around the holiday, especially at the Malecón and city parks. Outside that busy spell, February is generally quieter than the main July–August and December travel periods. Prices can rise for the holiday, but the rest of the month is often better value.
Make rain work for you
Use a wet afternoon for the Museo Antropológico y de Arte Contemporáneo, beside the Malecón, then walk the riverside when the rain eases. For a local meal, try encebollado, a tuna and onion soup often eaten for breakfast; it's a good reason to duck into a covered market or restaurant. Travelling with kids? Parque Seminario's iguanas are an easy stop, but paths can be slippery after a shower. February isn't Guayaquil's easiest month for sightseeing; May and June usually bring more comfortable conditions.
