Visiting Guayaquil in July
July: hot city days
July is dry, sticky and hot, with daytime highs reaching 37°C and nights staying warm. The cloud cover can make the day feel dull, and sunshine is limited, but rain rarely gets in the way. The heat is the bigger challenge: long walks around the city can feel draining, especially in the afternoon.
The Malecón 2000 riverside walkway and Las Peñas are still worth visiting, but keep outdoor sightseeing short when the sun is strongest. Guayaquil's parks and indoor stops make better choices then. The weather isn't ideal for a long day on the nearby beaches, either.
City anniversary
July 25 is Guayaquil's founding anniversary, marked with civic events and celebrations around the city. The Malecón and central streets can be busier around the holiday, so expect more local visitors and some disruption near event areas.
If you hate crowds, visit the riverside sights on a weekday away from the anniversary. July is generally less of a tourist rush than the main holiday periods, so you may find a calmer city and better-value stays outside the celebrations.
Make the heat work
Travelling with kids? Keep the hottest part of the day for indoor stops, then head out to the Malecón as the afternoon eases. July's low rainfall makes it easier to enjoy the riverside without planning around showers, but the heat still limits how long you'll want to walk.
For a useful local stop, try encebollado, a filling fish-and-onion soup often served with toasted corn. It's a good lunch after a short wander through Las Peñas, rather than pushing on through the midday heat. Don't expect July to feel like Guayaquil's best-weather months: May and June are more comfortable.
