Dodoma Weather in January

January: wet-season days

January is warm, cloudy and often wet. Expect sticky afternoons, with rain falling on many days and just a few hours of sunshine on average. December is a little hotter, while February is less rainy.

You can still visit the Gaddafi Mosque or explore central Dodoma between showers. But keep outdoor plans flexible: muddy paths and sudden downpours can make a long walk or a trip to the vineyards less pleasant. The evenings are milder, so a meal of Dodoma's local grapes or nyama choma, grilled meat, can be a good end to the day.

Holidays and local rhythm

New Year's Day is a public holiday, so some offices and shops may close. January 12 is Zanzibar Revolution Day, a public holiday in Zanzibar; it isn't a major Dodoma event.

January is generally quieter for leisure trips than the drier May-to-July period. Rain tends to put some visitors off, so you may find fewer tourists and more competitive hotel rates. Still, Dodoma is Tanzania's capital, and work-related travel can keep some hotels busy.

If you hate crowds, January's calmer sightseeing may suit you, as long as you're happy to work around showers.

Make the rain work for you

Aim for central sights when the sky is clear, then leave indoor stops or a slow lunch for rainy spells. Nyerere Square is easy to reach from the city centre, but wet pavements can make wandering around less comfortable.

For a practical local tip, ask your hotel about the road conditions before setting off for the vineyards outside Dodoma. Heavy rain can make the drive slower, and a short local check is more useful than relying on a tight schedule. If the weather turns, stay in town and try a glass of Dodoma wine with dinner instead.
