April: rain still shapes the day

April feels warm and damp in Dodoma. Highs reach 28°C, while evenings cool to around 18°C. Rain falls on 17 days, and the sky is often cloudy, so expect showers to interrupt some plans. There's still about five hours of sunshine a day, and the weather is rated good for a visit.

You can visit the Bunge, Tanzania's Parliament, or explore central Dodoma between showers. For a longer outing, Kondoa's rock art sites are best with a clear route and reliable transport; wet roads can make the journey harder. Don't count on a full day outdoors without a rain plan.

Holidays and quieter streets

Union Day falls on April 26 and marks the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Ceremonies may take place, while government offices and some businesses close. Easter also sometimes falls in April, bringing church services and changes to opening hours.

If you hate crowds, April is a calmer choice than the busier May-to-July period. It's also part of the rainy season, so visitor demand and prices are generally lower than in those drier months. You may find some services less convenient, though, especially outside the city.

Make the most of a wet day

March is wetter, with 132 mm of rain, while May drops sharply to 17 mm. April's 84 mm makes it a middle ground: less rain than March, but showers are still a regular part of the visit. Save flexible plans for days when clouds break.

Travelling with kids? Keep a visit to Nyerere Square or the nearby shops as your easy backup when rain starts. For a local meal, try chips mayai, an omelette with chips, at a central café. Ask about opening hours around Union Day before heading across town.
