Visiting Zanzibar in April
April: long rains
April is hot, sticky and very wet, and it's one of the least comfortable months to visit Zanzibar. Rain falls on most days, and thick cloud can make the coast feel grey rather than sunny. Showers may cut into beach time and boat trips, so don't plan on a full day of swimming or snorkelling.
That said, you can still get out and about. Stone Town works well between showers. Duck into the Old Fort or wander the covered lanes, then settle in for a plate of Zanzibar pilau. Some roads and paths turn muddy, so a long countryside walk is probably not worth the effort this month.
Events and a slower pace
Union Day falls on April 26 and marks the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. You may see local celebrations, though the exact plans vary from year to year. Eid al-Fitr can also fall in April, depending on the lunar calendar, so expect changes to opening hours around the holiday.
April is also one of the quietest and least expensive months on the island. Hotels and tours often cost less than in the busy June-to-September season, and Stone Town feels calmer. The trade-off is the rain. Some beach days may be washed out, and smaller operators may run fewer trips. Budget travellers can enjoy the slower feel, but should leave room in their plans for wet afternoons.
Make rainy days easier
Keep your outings short and close to town. Stone Town's narrow lanes are a good choice, and you'll have an easier time than in the open. After rain, the old stone paving can be slick, so take care on the steps. A taxi can save you a soggy walk back to your hotel.
For a change of scene, visit Darajani Market when the weather eases. It's a lively place to see local food and daily life, but the surrounding streets can get muddy. If a beach break is your main goal, aim for June or later, when the weather is generally better. March is a little drier than April, and May is still wet, so April is not the month to pick if you want sunshine.
