Best Time to Visit Dodoma

Dry season: May to October

Dodoma is Tanzania's official capital, but it feels more like a big, spread-out town than a busy city. The dry months are the easy ones. From June to August you'll get almost no rain, and the sun shines for most of the day. Days are warm, not hot, and nights turn properly cool. July is the chilliest, with lows around 13°C, so bring a jacket for evenings.

May is the sweet spot if you want green hills left over from the rains. It's already dry, but the land hasn't turned brown yet.

By September and October, the heat builds. Days reach 32 to 33°C, and the dust gets thick. It's still good for travel, just less comfortable at midday. Plan outdoor stops for the morning.

Rains: November to April

November brings short showers, and the heat is still strong. From December to March, the rain is heavy. January is the wettest month, with 193 mm falling on 20 days. Roads out of town can turn to mud, and the sky often stays grey.

April is the tail end. It's still damp, but it's rated Good, and the worst is over. If you're on a budget and don't mind a few soggy afternoons, it's a fair pick.

Which month for which trip

Want to see the wine country? Dodoma is known for its vineyards, and the grape harvest runs roughly from February to April, though that's also when the rain is heaviest. For easy drives and tastings, the dry months are far less stressful.

Planning to continue to Kondoa Rock-Art Sites, a UNESCO World Heritage area north of town? Go between June and August. The tracks are dry, and walking among the painted shelters is much nicer without mud.

Working in the capital? Parliament sessions bring officials and visitors into town, so hotels can fill quickly. Check the parliamentary calendar before you pick dates.

Crowds and events

Dodoma has no big tourist high season. Most visitors pass through on the way to Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Ruaha, so you'll rarely fight crowds. Prices and availability depend more on government business than on the weather.

The Nane Nane farming fair, held on 8 August, is the main local event. It's a good reason to visit in the dry, sunny part of the year.
