Best Time to Visit Mwanza

Dry months: June to August

This is the best stretch. July is the driest month, with almost no rain, and June isn't far behind. Days are sunny and warm, and nights are a little cooler. Humidity drops too, so the air feels easy on Lake Victoria's shore.

These months suit almost any plan. Climb the granite boulders around Capricorn Point and Bismarck Rock for sunset. Take a boat out to Saa Nane Island or Rubondo Island National Park. Most people use Mwanza as a gateway to the Serengeti, which is also in its dry season now, so wildlife is easier to spot. Expect more safari travellers passing through, and schools abroad break in July and August. Mwanza itself never gets truly packed, though.

August is the hottest month at 30°C, tied with September. It's still dry enough to enjoy.

May and September: the in-between months

May is the one to watch. The long rains are fading, the rain falls on about half the days, and the sun is back. Everything is green and quieter. It's a good pick if you want a lower-key trip.

September is warm and mostly bright, but showers creep back. They're short and don't ruin a day. It works well for city walks, the Saturday crowds at Mwaloni fish market, and a plate of grilled tilapia by the lake.

Rainy months: October to April

There are two wet spells. The short rains run from October to December, and the long rains come in March and April. November is the wettest month, with rain on most days and little sun. April is the next worst, and rain falls on almost every day.

Be honest with yourself here. Roads get muddy, boat trips can be bumpy, and views from the rocks are often grey. Safari lodges are cheaper and empty, but the Serengeti's tracks can be slow going in April.

January and February are a pleasant break. They're a bit drier, and still warm. Rain tends to arrive as an afternoon downpour, so mornings are often fine for the market or a ferry ride. If you're on a budget and don't mind a shower, this is a smart time to come.

For the easiest trip, aim for late June or July.
