January feels mild and dry in Luxor. Daytime highs reach 22°C, but evenings can drop to 7°C, so the day changes as the sun goes down. Rain is almost unheard of, and clear skies suit long visits to Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings.

You can spend hours among the temples without the fierce heat of summer. The cooler mornings are good for walking around the West Bank tombs. Save a felucca ride on the Nile for the warmer part of the day, and don't count on a warm evening on deck.

Festivals and local life

Coptic Christmas falls on January 7 and is celebrated by Egypt's Coptic Christian community. You may notice church services and holiday activity, though Luxor's main sights remain focused on its ancient temples and tombs.

For families, the comfortable days make exploring Medinet Habu easier than it would be in summer. The sun can still feel strong around open temple courtyards, so take a pause in the shade between the columns at Karnak.

Crowds and costs

January is part of Luxor's popular winter season, when visitors come to escape hotter months. Expect more people at the Valley of the Kings and Karnak than in summer, and generally higher hotel prices than during the quieter, hotter season. It's not the calmest time, but the weather makes sightseeing far more comfortable.

A useful local trick: take the public ferry from Luxor's East Bank across to the West Bank, then arrange transport to the tombs. It's a simple way to cross the Nile before a day among the sights. Bring something warm for the return trip if you're staying out after sunset.
