October: heat easing

October still feels hot in Luxor, especially around midday, but evenings are much more comfortable. Afternoons can reach 36°C, while nights cool to about 19°C. Rain isn't expected, and the skies are usually clear.

You'll have better conditions than in September, when highs reach 40°C. Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple and the tombs on the West Bank are easier to enjoy in the cooler parts of the day. Save a felucca ride on the Nile or a stroll along the Corniche for late afternoon. Skip long, exposed walks at midday; the Valley of the Kings has little shade.

Holidays and busy sights

Egypt's Armed Forces Day falls on October 6. It's a national holiday, so some public offices may close, though the main sights generally remain part of a tourist visit. There isn't a major Luxor festival that takes place every October.

October is a shoulder month: quieter than the busy November-to-February season, but visitor numbers begin to rise as the weather improves. You may find less pressure at sights than in winter, and accommodation can cost less. The trade-off is the lingering afternoon heat.

A good fit for temple fans

Couples who enjoy ancient sites without winter crowds may find October a welcome balance, as long as they're happy to avoid the hottest hours. For a West Bank day, cross the Nile by local ferry from the Luxor Corniche, then arrange a driver or taxi to reach the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple. The ferry lands near the village of Al-Gezira, so agree on your onward ride before setting off.
