Visiting Chania in August
August heat
August is hot, dry and very sunny in Chania. Afternoons can feel sticky in the stone lanes of the Old Town, so sightseeing is easier in the morning or later in the day. The Venetian Harbour is lovely at sunset, when the heat eases and the waterfront comes alive.
The sea is a good place to spend the hottest hours. Nea Chora beach is close to town, while a trip to Balos or Elafonissi makes a full day of swimming and beach time. Long hikes are less appealing in the midday heat. Save the Samaria Gorge for a cooler month, or go only if you're ready for a demanding day.
Crowds and celebrations
August is among Chania's busiest and priciest months. Greek and European school holidays bring families to the beaches, and rooms and restaurant tables are harder to find than in spring or autumn. July is also hot and dry, but August is still peak summer; September is usually a calmer choice.
On August 15, Greece celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a major religious holiday. You may see church services and local celebrations, though the day's events vary by area. Some shops and services may close, so don't count on every place being open.
If you hate crowds, wander the Old Town early, before tour groups fill its narrow lanes.
Make the heat easier
For a quieter swim near town, head to Nea Chora rather than staying around the harbour. It's also a handy choice when you don't want to spend the day travelling to a distant beach. Afterward, try bougatsa at a bakery in the Old Town: this local pastry is often filled with cheese or sweet cream.
Travelling with kids? Keep the midday hours for a long lunch or a rest, then take a gentle evening walk along the harbour. You'll enjoy the views more once the sun is lower.
