Visiting Bodrum in August
Heat and sea days
August in Bodrum is properly hot, with highs around 32°C and warm nights near 25°C. The sun is strong, skies are usually clear, and rain is rare. That makes it a good month for swimming and boat trips around the peninsula. Save a stroll through Bodrum Castle or the old town's narrow lanes for later in the day, when the heat eases.
If you hate crowds, August probably isn't your month: June or September is calmer.
Festivals and holidays
The Bodrum International Ballet Festival usually brings performances to Bodrum Castle in summer, including August. Seeing a show in the castle is a memorable way to spend an evening, but check the programme for dates and tickets.
Turkey's Victory Day falls on 30 August. It's a national public holiday, so expect local celebrations and some changes to normal opening hours. Bodrum's waterfront and central streets can feel especially busy around the holiday.
Crowds and practical tips
August is peak season, with busier beaches, full restaurants and higher accommodation prices than in spring or autumn. July is similarly hot, while September is cooler and often a more comfortable choice for sightseeing. August sees very little rain, so don't count on a shower to break up a beach day.
For a cooler cultural stop, visit Bodrum Castle near opening time, then leave the waterfront for a long lunch. Try local çökertme kebabı, a Bodrum dish of thin fried potatoes, meat and yoghurt. It's a filling meal best enjoyed in the shade before the afternoon heat settles in.
