February weather

February feels cool, damp and changeable in Chania. Days reach about 14°C, while nights stay near 11°C. Rain falls on around 12 days, and cloud often softens the light. You'll get some sunny spells, but don't count on a full beach day.

It's a good month for strolling the Old Venetian Harbour, visiting the Archaeological Museum in Chalepa, or lingering over lunch in a taverna. The sea and wet paths make swimming and longer hikes less appealing. Samaria Gorge is closed in winter, so save that trip for another season.

Winter celebrations

February can fall during Apokries, Greece's carnival season. The dates shift each year, but you may find festive events and special meals around Chania. Tsiknopempti, or "Smoky Thursday," is a carnival-season day for grilled meat. If it lands during your visit, local tavernas are a fun place to join the mood.

Travelling with kids? A rainy afternoon suits the Maritime Museum at Firkas Fortress better than a long coastal walk.

Quieter streets

February is winter low season, so Chania is generally calmer than in summer. You'll have more room around the harbour and less competition for a table than during peak months. Some seasonal businesses may be closed, though, and the weather can change your plans.

For a practical wet-day plan, head to the Archaeological Museum in Chalepa, then take a taxi back if the walk to the harbour feels dreary. Try boureki, a local baked dish of zucchini, potato and cheese, when you want a warming lunch.
