Visiting Chania in July
July: hot and bright
July is hot, dry and sunny in Chania. The days reach 30°C, and evenings stay warm, so sightseeing can feel tiring by afternoon. Rain is rare, with just one rainy day in the month on average.
The long sunny days suit a swim at Nea Chora beach or a slow wander around the Venetian Harbour later on. Save the climb up to the Firka Fortress for cooler hours, and avoid a long inland hike in the midday heat. The Samaria Gorge is open in summer, but its exposed trail can be a tough choice on a hot day.
Festivals and crowds
July is peak season. The Old Town and harbour fill with visitors, and stays usually cost more than in spring or autumn. Chania's cultural programme often brings concerts and performances to the city in summer. Around July 17, nearby Agia Marina celebrates its name day, a local religious feast.
If you hate crowds, head to the harbour early, then spend the hottest part of the day somewhere cool.
Make the most of it
For a cooler start, walk from the Old Venetian Harbour to Nea Chora for a swim and lunch. It's an easy route on foot, and you can try the local fish tavernas by the beach. In town, stop at Iordanis for bougatsa, a flaky pastry filled with cheese and topped with cinnamon.
The sea and long evenings make July a good fit if beaches are your priority. For gentler sightseeing and fewer visitors, June or September is usually a better bet.
