June: heat and rain

June is still hot, with highs around 35°C and sticky afternoons, and that heat is the main reason it scores poorly here. Rain arrives often, though. Showers can freshen the air and bring greener views around the city, but you'll get less sunshine overall, and wet paths can slow a visit to the Ellora Caves or Daulatabad Fort. Save outdoor sightseeing for gaps in the rain, and don't plan a full day around exposed fort steps.

If you're travelling with young children, the humid afternoons can wear them out fast. Keep Aurangabad's indoor museums for the hottest part of the day.

Festivals and quieter streets

June doesn't have one fixed major festival here. Eid al-Adha and Ashadhi Ekadashi may fall in June, but their dates shift with the lunar calendar. If they do, you'll see local prayers and gatherings, especially around mosques and temples. The city's most famous Ellora Festival comes later in the year, so don't count on it for this trip.

Crowds are usually thinner than in the cooler months from November to January. Heat and rain put plenty of people off, so hotels can cost less than they do in peak season. The trade-off is slower sightseeing when showers hit, and some days may feel grey.

A smart Ellora day

June sits in the middle of its neighbours. May is much hotter and drier, while July is cooler but wetter. June brings rain on many days, yet you can still catch dry spells, so keep your plans flexible rather than counting on a long, uninterrupted day outdoors. If you can choose your timing, November to January is far more comfortable.

For Ellora, take the road from Aurangabad after checking local conditions, and allow extra time if rain slows the journey. The cave complex has carved interiors to explore when showers begin, but the approach and paths can be slippery. Carry a small umbrella for moving between caves. It's more useful here than trying to shelter under the rock-cut entrances.
