Dry heat, bright days

August feels hot and dry in Ankara. Afternoons reach 33°C, while evenings cool to around 17°C. Rain is scarce, so you're unlikely to lose a sightseeing day to showers. The strong sun can make exposed places tiring, though.

Visit Anıtkabir in the morning, then spend the hottest hours inside the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. Ankara Castle's steep lanes are better saved for late afternoon, when the climb feels less demanding. Skip long, exposed walks around Eymir Lake at midday.

August events

Victory Day on 30 August marks Turkey's victory in the War of Independence. You may see flags, ceremonies and events around the city, including near Anıtkabir. It's a meaningful date, but some public offices and services close for the holiday.

If you hate crowds, Ankara is still calmer than Turkey's coastal holiday towns. The main change is around the ceremonies, where streets and public spaces can fill with local visitors.

Quieter city, warm evenings

Ankara's summer school break means some residents leave town, and the usual business crowds thin out. August can feel quieter than spring and autumn, which are among the best months for visiting. Hotel demand may also be lower than during busy conference periods, though prices vary.

Travelling with kids? The cool-down after sunset makes a stroll through Hamamönü more comfortable. Try a local plate of Ankara tava, a lamb and rice dish, at dinner. For a practical stop, use the Kızılay metro area to get across the city when the afternoon heat makes walking between sights less appealing.
