Ankara Weather in July

July: dry, sunny days

July is hot and very dry in Ankara. Afternoons reach 32°C, while evenings cool to around 16°C. Rain is rare, and long, bright days suit open-air sights such as Anıtkabir and Ankara Castle.

The midday sun can make the climb around the castle tiring, so save it for later in the day. Museums and shaded cafés make better stops during the hottest hours. July is drier than June, but August gets slightly hotter.

Events and summer pace

July 15 is Democracy and National Unity Day, a public holiday in Turkey. Ankara holds ceremonies and commemorations, especially around official sites; expect some closures or changes to traffic near them.

If you hate crowds, July can feel calmer than spring and autumn, Ankara's best-known sightseeing seasons. Many residents leave the capital for summer breaks, so central streets may be quieter. Hotel prices can also be softer than in peak months, though holiday events may bring local visitors.

Make the heat work for you

Travelling with kids? Keep the open-air visit to Anıtkabir short in the afternoon, then head inside to the museum. Its exhibits offer a cool break and give the visit more context.

For Ankara Castle, take a taxi up from Ulus rather than turning the uphill walk into a midday trek. You can explore the old lanes when the sun eases, then try Ankara tava, a local lamb-and-rice dish, nearby. If you want cooler weather instead, Istanbul is a nearby alternative, though it's a longer trip.
