Visiting Konya in July
July: dry, bright days
Konya's July weather is hot and very sunny, with warm afternoons and cooler evenings. Rain is rare, so outdoor plans are less likely to get disrupted. But walking between sights in the afternoon can feel tiring, especially around the open squares near Mevlana Museum.
The long daylight gives you time for a relaxed visit to Alaeddin Hill or the Karatay Medrese. Save longer outdoor walks for later in the day, and use the hottest hours for a museum or a slow lunch of etli ekmek, Konya's long, thin meat-topped flatbread.
Plan around the heat
Families with young children may find the midday sun hard going; Mevlana Museum is a better stop during the cooler part of the day.
July isn't one of Konya's best months for comfortable sightseeing. Spring and early autumn are milder, while August is hotter and drier. July is also Turkey's summer school-holiday period, so there can be more domestic travellers than in quieter months. Konya is not a beach resort, though, and its main sights are usually less crowded than Turkey's coast. Hotel rates can be higher than in spring or autumn.
Events and local details
Konya's best-known Mevlana ceremonies take place in December, not July. Don't expect the city's major whirling dervish events to be part of a July visit. July is better for exploring at an unhurried pace than for planning around a large festival.
At the Mevlana Museum, the courtyard is exposed to the sun, so visit when the day is cooler. Then take a break nearby with a glass of tea or a plate of etli ekmek. The dry weather suits a day trip to Çatalhöyük, but its open archaeological site offers little shade, so the heat can make a long visit uncomfortable.
